Sun Safety- What Do I Need to Know?

Posted on

So I will be the first to admit that finding the right sunscreen can be very confusing. There are so many ingredients and even more brands to buy from. I’ve been researching brands and ingredients over the last few years to find my perfect match, but over the last week I have had a number of inquiries about what people should be looking for. Much of the information that I found are from Canadian Sources, and medical sites, along with my go to The Melanoma Network of Canada.

There are two main types of sunscreens: physical and chemical

Physical sunscreens sit on top of your skin and create a barrier and block UV rays from being absorbed into your skin. The main ingredients you will find are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Pros

  • Once it is applied you are protected
  • Less likely to irritate the skin
  • Better for people who have redness or rosacea
  • Ideal for acne prone skin because it is less likely to clog pores

Cons

  • Can leave a white cast on skin
  • Needs to be reapplied often because it can rub or wash off easily
  • Can feel heavier on your skin

Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin and absorb the UV rays and turn it into heat which is released by the skin.

Pros

  • The consistency of the sunscreen is thinner and easier to spread

Cons

  • You need to apply 20 minutes before going into the sun
  • Can increase brown sun spots because UV rays are still absorbed into the skin
  • May clog pores or increase breakouts
  • Can increase redness in skin

There are a number of things you should be looking for when shopping for sunscreen

Just remember, the best sunscreen is the one you will actually wear!
